Proficiency
This is how proficient you are with a given skill, armor, or weapon.
You are either “Unskilled”, “Skilled”, “Professional”, or “Exceptional” at something. Depending on how skilled you are at something, you use a different formula:
- Unskilled: Add a relevant ability modifier.
- Skilled: Add a relevant ability modifier + your level.
- Professional: Add a relevant ability modifier + your level + 3.
- Exceptional: Add a relevant ability modifier + your level + 6.
- Negatives: If you have a negative modifier, it imposes a penalty to your proficiency.
Common Uses for Proficiency Rolls
- Attacking: You roll a proficiency roll, typically using Strength for melee attacks and Dexterity for ranged attack, to hit an opponent.
- Skills: You roll a proficiency roll for skills. The skill’s entry will tell you what ability modifier to use. (For example: Stealth uses Dexterity, Athletics uses Strength, etc.)
- Spellcasting: When attacking with a spell, casting under adverse conditions, attempting to apply metamagics to a spell, or a spellcasting check is called for, you roll a proficiency check. Such a check uses the mental ability modifier (Charisma, Intelligence, or Wisdom) indicated by the class or other source that grants you Spellcasting.
- Other: There are other instances where a proficiency roll may be required. Such instances are spelled out in their description and the ability modifier utilized is called out.
